We wake up in Kingman, a city that fully embraces its connection to the Route 66. We stay there for a while, take some photos, talk to our families on WhatsApp thanks to the Internet at the tourist office and we take a look at the locations of campsites on the road. Then we continue our journey on the Route 66.

We will stay almost the entire the day on this historic Route, stopping in some of the cities and typical roadside dinners. Julia and Doo will feel like they are transported into an American movie from the 60s. Côme will be delighted to be in the land of Lightning McQueen. We will meet many of the characters from the cartoon: Martin, Sheriff, Flo, Ramone, Luigi, Sarge and Philmore. We will also have a snowball fight. Isn’t that crazy? We wouldn’t have thought it would have been possible in the desert. But hey! We’re in the United States, the land where everything is possible right?! We are actually there!!! In the United States we imagined. It really puts a gigantic smile on our faces. 😁

In the evening, we’re a few kilometers away from the Grand Canyon. We look for one of the campsites we had spotted on an app for campers but when we get there, the road is blocked. There is snow everywhere. So we turn around and try another campsite a few kilometers below. This time, we can access the road but it is muddy and extremely slippery. We drive deep into the forest looking for a spot to park but there are none and it becomes really dangerous to move forward… So we backtrack to the entrance of this “ghost campsite”. Since there is no room to turn around, Julia first guides Doo reversing from the outside. But we quickly realize that we will have to go all the way in reverse (and that’s about 2 miles) so she hops into the back of the van to guide him. Next time, we really have to get to a camping spot before it gets dark… Tonight, Yakisobas is on the menu!! We’ve found some at the supermarket. 😄

Today, Côme:
Did not understand: why the camping we were supposed to sleep in was just a very long dirt road with no way to sleep.
Learnt: that freight trains were at least 2 km long.
Loved: the signs with the two 6s.

Julia:
Did not understand: why there were animals and weird looking dolls in the old cars.
Learnt: that saloons still existed.
Loved: to jump back in time on the Route 66.

Doo :
Did not understand: why the Route 66 disappeared without warning.
Learnt: that the cities on the road kept their historic charm.
Loved: the roadside dinners.
